Getting in touch with QNAP has been a pleasant and positive experience and the TVS-h1288X NAS has solved a very simple, yet huge problem for me as a photo- and videographer: storage. I am very happy with the solution.

Challenge
As image resolution and associated data sizes increase, as does the need for storage space. With two almost-full 10TB hard drives in a desktop computer serving as primary storage, and ten external hard drives with B-roll, it was not easy for Mads to find specific files. Most of his contents were RAW files or 4K recordings, and it could take a long time for these files to be accessed. Most importantly, none of these storage devices had RAID protection, which meant that their stored data could potentially be lost forever if one of the drives failed.

Solution
Mads chose the 12-bay desktop TVS-h1288X NAS with a Thunderbolt™ 3 expansion card. Inside the TVS-h1288X are eight 14TB WD Red™ Plus NAS 3.5-inch hard drives that provide ample space for data storage, and two 1TB WD Red™ SATA 2.5-inch SSDs for cache acceleration. Aiming to maximize NAS performance, he also added two WD BLACK™ SN750 NVMe SSD in the M.2 slots of the NAS. As the TVS-h1288X comes with two 10GbE ports as standard, Mads used one of these ports for directly connecting to his Windows® desktop computer.
Result
Mads described the results as “I can definitely feel the difference: My workflow is faster and less interrupted, and I can act easier on a fleeting idea, when all my footage is easy to access.” For initial data protection settings, he selected RAID 6 to protect his data from drive failures and also set scheduled Snapshots to help protect against ransomware attacks and unintentional data deletion. Mads also adds: “The fact that I can access my data from anywhere and even share content to others directly from the NAS is intriguing. I am very pleased with the solution.” Mads also got a QSW-M2108-2C 10GbE switch in his studio, which provides plug-and-play settings, to allocate IP addresses on each device in the future.

I am definitely looking forward to using this QNAP NAS for collaborations with other film makers. We might then all connect to the same project and files on the NAS and work together on the same timeline.
